Winter In Wonderland

Picture
ATV Tourism is a new concept; it's promising, exciting and it's successful thus far. You know what else?

We're part of it. That, in itself puts a smile on our face.

The Internet is a wonderful thing. We have been able to reach far and wide, attracting Visitors to our little Historic Town Of Pocahontas, Virginia from all over the Country.

The Two Virginia's have a gift that can't be found anywhere else in the World: legal riding trails tucked away in  the scenic Appalachian Mountains.

Just add culture, ATV Friendly roads, the perfect terrain, and some good ol' hospitality and you have yourself the premier outdoor recreation destination.

The impact that ATV Tourism is beginning to show on our local economies is nothing short of impressive and promising.

Southwest Virginia's Spearhead Trails were recently featured in an article HERE discussing the positive impact the Trails have presented thus far as well as the potential to provide jobs reviving a coal- dominated economy.

With the rise in the reliance of technology for entertainment, and increased time indoors for children. I can't help but reflect on my childhood and the vast generational differences.

Getting up, getting active and enjoying the outdoors allows kids to be kids in the truest form. ATV trails provide a safe, fun way for families to do this together. We are fortunate to be able to provide this service to families world-wide.

Legal trails provide legal, hassle free fun. Besides......what's more fun than THIS?!

Reaching the point where we can take guests has been a long time coming, but as they say "good things come to those who wait."

We could not be happier with how everything turned out with our first group! We were lucky enough to host the riding group "Bad Habits" as our first guests.

These folks were simply awesome!

Pictures really do speak a thousand words......

August Updates From The Real Mccoy Cabins

8/10/2015

First off, we would like to say thank you to each and every person who has been following our progress, lending a hand, and supporting our family business.

It was a huge shocker to look on our Instagram page and see that we have 15,000 followers from all over the World! If we have this much support prior to opening our doors to you all, we absolutely cannot wait to see what happens when we begin having guests.

We've got company

As many of you may have heard, we are no longer the only Cabin Rentals in progress on the Pocahontas Spearhead Trails. Investors from Trailhead Lodging LLC are planning a large-scale campground at Spearhead's Boissevain Trailhead.

We are absolutely thrilled to hear this news. Having more beds available for out of town riders provides the opportunity to make Southwestern Virginia a hub for ATV related tourism; which in turn will bring an economic stimulus to our Town and surrounding areas.

With the development of Trailhead Lodging, we look forward to the possibility of hosting large scale trail related events in our area, similar to the Hatfield McCoy Trailfest held annually in Gilbert, West Virginia.

A few Cabins Down, many more to go.

Upon the completion of these three cabins in September, we will be opening our doors to the public while continuing to work towards our ultimate goal of fifteen cabins.

Being that we will still be under construction, our cabins will be offered at a special discounted rate.

We can't wait to see some our guests and the fall foliage arriving!

A Day On The Pocahontas Spearhead Trail

7/18/2015

Riding The "OP"

The OP Trail is one of the newest trails in the Region. In my opinion, it's also one of the best kept secrets.

This section of The Spearhead Trails is a great ride with a mix of terrain from muddy creek bottoms to rocky hill climbs and scenic overlooks. The majority of this 50 mile trail system consists of "blue" trails which provide the perfect blend of difficulty to be an exciting ride, but still family friendly.

Although, after the recent torrential down-pours, the trails have been washed out a bit which has made them quite a bit more challenging. So, if you are up for technical rides and an adrenaline rush this week is the time to head over to the Original Pocahontas Trail.

With the recent floods, some of the trail markers have been knocked down and the Spearhead Crew hasn't been able to get out to service the trails yet, so definitely proceed with a bit of caution.

Picture
Luckily, since our cabins are just a stone's throw from the Virginia/ West Virginia border, we are in the perfect position to be able to ride both the Hatfield McCoy and Spearhead Trail systems daily.

The West Virginia side (Hatfield McCoy Pocahontas Trail, Bramwell) contains a higher percentage of Green trails compared to the OP Trail, which makes the ride more family friendly in general.

While I must admit I am partial to the terrain and over-all riding of the Virginia based "OP" trail, the maintenance and mapping is far superior on the older and more established Hatfield McCoy System.

This is not to mention the Hatfield McCoy Pocahontas Trail connects to 2 other trail systems (Indian Ridge & Pinnacle Creek), which winds up being around 150 miles of continuous trail.

With that being said, if you're in the area and you can afford both trail permits, the Spearhead Trails are certainly something worth exploring.

I expect the system will only get better as they keep adding miles of trails.

You can learn more about both trail systems and their permits on their websites.

Cabin Construction Progress & Area Updates - July

Coming Together

Picture
Over the past year we have been slowly but surely piecing this project together. This past Month has really been the first time that the vision is becoming clear.

Things are heating up, and it's getting exciting.

Looking out the window and seeing not one, but three cabins lets us know we are getting closer and closer to being able to host guests this season.

In fact, we were fortunate enough to have a member of our family from Florida visit this past week, and take a cabin for a test drive. Everything went so smoothly, she truly loved her cabin. We couldn't be more pleased with the outcome.

With that being said, we are thrilled to announce that we will begin renting cabins to the public in early September of 2015.  These three cabins will comfortably sleep up to six guests (Queen sized bed, twin sized bunks and a full-sized futon.) The cost will be in the $140/night range.

Amenities Include:
  • Private restroom complete with shower, and hot water.
  • Central A/C & Heat
  • Flat Screen TV w/ cable
  • Complimentary WiFi
  • Kitchenette equipped with an apartment sized refrigerator
  • Backyard area with private fire pit
  • BBQ grill
  • Linens provided

Although we will be opening our doors with three cabins available for rental, our ultimate goal is to build up to fifteen cabins  of many different sizes and floor plans within the next few years.

Real McCoy Cabins - Construction Update

6/24/2015

One Cabin Down, Five To Go.....(For Now!)

You know how the old saying goes...Rome wasn't built in a day.  That is definitely re-assuring because it seems like we have been under construction forever!

Maybe it's the fact that we are anxious to meet you all, ride the trails, and see what you think of our cabins so far. There's also the excitement of being the first Lodging accommodations specifically geared for the ATV Trails (Hatfield McCoy & Spearhead)  in the Town Of Pocahontas.

Cabin #1 is the first of five "small" cabins that will be part of the Real McCoy Family. #1 will comfortably sleep up to six and the amenities will include:
  • Central A/C & Heat.
  • Bathroom with a hot shower.
  • Kitchenette
  • 32" Flat Screen TV with cable
  •  Free WiFi
  • Outdoor Grill
  • Fire Pit

Having our first cabin out of the way, the first timer jitters are out.... well....for the most part. Seriously though, we could not be more pleased with how it has turned out. The decision to use local contractors for our campground has proven to be a great choice.

The craftsmanship, attention to detail and customization involved in the construction of this cabin give it a true "home sweet home" feel. You just can't buy that feeling in a kit. I mean, really....our crew has out - done themselves. Custom built beds, counter tops and closets?!

And then there were 3....or there will be!

Real McCoy Kitchen Recipe - Strawberry TrifleĀ

5/27/2015

Picture

The Recipe

What do you do when someone brings you two buckets of Farm Fresh, Virginia grown strawberries?

You make strawberry everything. Mema has been cooking up a strawberry storm the past few days and this Strawberry Trifle was among the favorites (well, maybe tied with the strawberry butter!)

This Trifle is the perfect combination of refreshing and sweet, it was a great mid- day pick up for the long construction days.

  • 1-2 quarts strawberries
  • 1 large angel food or pound cake
  • 2-6 oz. boxes instant vanilla pudding
  • 1 - 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 qt. whipping cream
  • 1 - 8 oz. frozen whipped topping, slightly thawed
  • Additional whipped topping

Rinse, blot dry and slice strawberries, set aside. Cut cake into small pieces, set aside.

In a large bowl mix pudding, sweetened condensed milk and whipping cream together on medium until blended. Fold in container of whipped topping.

In trifle dish layer bottom with cake, add layer of strawberries, layer of pudding mixture and repeat. Top with additional whipped cream and strawberries to garnish trifle. Refrigerate until chilled. 4 hours or overnight.

Recipe courtesy of The Virginia Department of Agriculture - Virginia Grown Strawberry Recipes.

Enjoy!
